Shyira may be one of the smallest coffee washing stations, but it has one of the biggest personalities. Built in 2017, Shyira is the highest known coffee washing station in Rwanda, perched at 1,850 metres above sea level, with cherries sourced from farms reaching 2,300 metres. It is home to nearly 1,900 smallholder farming families, whose dedication produces some of the country’s most distinctive Red Bourbon coffees.  

An hour’s drive into the mountains from the township of Musanze (Ruhengeri), the journey itself is unforgettable. As the road climbs through Rwanda’s volcanic highlands, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking panorama of fertile volcanic soils, cool mountain air and dramatic ridgelines. These unique growing conditions slow the maturation of the coffee cherries, allowing them to develop exceptional sweetness, complexity and vibrant acidity.  

At the summit, you are rewarded with one of the most spectacular views in Rwanda. The majestic Virunga Volcanoes stretch across the horizon, forming the ancient home of the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Below, the Gicice River winds through valleys often blanketed by morning mist, while white sandy riverbeds, cascading waterfalls and endless green hills create a landscape that feels almost untouched by time.  

Despite its modest size, Shyira produces fully washed, honey and natural coffees, each expressing the remarkable character of this extraordinary terroir. Every harvest reminds us why altitude matters, and why coffees from Shyira consistently display remarkable elegance, clarity and longevity in the cup.  

It is often debated which of washing station is the most beautiful, Shyira, Kilimbi or Gisheke. The truth is, there is no winner. Each tells its own story. But once you’ve stood on the hills of Shyira, watched the clouds drift between the volcanoes and breathed in the cool mountain air, you’ll understand why so many quietly believe the “Little Baby” has something truly magical about it.
